Public Relations

PR- Good or Bad Press?

Having recently accepted a placement largely centred around PR (yay!!), it was only fitting to dedicate my next blog post to all things PR.

Public Relations can be defined as the management of communications and relationships to establish goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its public. PR can be a cost-effective way for organisations to carry messages with a high degree of credibility, complimenting the overall marketing communication strategy and should be used to develop the relationship between the organisation and its audiences.

Here are some of the PR techniques that are used:

Media Relations

Community Relations

Crisis Management

Corporate PR

I am now going to further discuss the different types of media relations, as there are a wide range of types of media that can be used within PR.

Press Releases
·         Press releases are commonly used within PR and it involves a written report that is sent to a range of media channels as news. Press releases can cover a number of areas within an organisation e.g. promotions, prizes and new products. Through the use of social media, press releases can include photos and videos to be linked within the article. Social media allows customers etc. to interact with the organisation and comment and leave opinions etc. about the press release.

Press Conferences
·         A press conference is best used when attempting to convey a message to a large number of people, where a press release won’t be suitable. This type of PR is used regularly by politicians and sports players but can also be used when trying to get help, e.g. organisations in crisis.

Interviews
·         An organisation can use interviews to get their messages or opinions across about a certain matter. Interviews can be posted on an online website/ social media or broadcast on the news. This type of media relation can be beneficial for an organisation as the interviews can be planned and they can control what the media sees and also when it is released.

Above are just some of the ways in which media relations and PR can be delivered. Public Relations is an important tool within an organisation that can be used to boost a businesses sales, gain new customers and also a steady reputation.

I can’t wait to get started on my placement and learn/ experience more!!! 💪
